The H.323 Global Network (HGN) serves as the hub in a global, fully-federated IP-based multimedia communication network that allows users to place calls to each other for free using voice and video.
2.1. What is it?OpenH323 is an open source implementation of the H.323 protocol suite. As such, it can directly interoperate with Microsoft NetMeeting. At the time of this writing (October 2000), OpenH323 is still early in its development cycle; buggy and in flux, but useful.
You can call an H.323/SIP videoconferencing endpoint into a Vidyo meeting, or call out from H.323/SIP videoconferencing endpoint to join a Vidyo meeting room. If you just want to call an H.323/SIP endpoint in a point-topoint-call, the you can do so by searching for them in your contacts list and placing a direct call. Videonor interoperability for Skype For Business works with all standards-based video conferencing solutions from a multitude of vendors (Cisco, Polycom, Lifesize, etc). That means any SIP or H.323 compatible system can join Skype for Business calls. Users can also join the same calls using their Skype for Business desktop client.
OpenH323 consists of several C++ libraries and some C++ client programs.

2.2. Why is it needed?OpenH323 is needed only if you want to make audio/video connections with NetMeeting clients directly from your Linux system. It is not needed to provide LDAP directory service to NetMeeting clients.
2.3. Where to get it?The main site is http://www.openh323.org/ and contains links to a download page, mirror sites, mailing lists, and other resources.
OhPhone, OpenAM, and PSTNgw are available as part of the standard distribution, in both source and executable formats. forwarder and openmcu are presently (December 2000) only available from the CVS archive, as modules named 'forwarder' and 'openmcu'.
2.4. InstallationFor OhPhone, OpenAM, and PSTNgw, download the executables. Unity source code. If you want to build from source, perhaps because you need forwarder or openmcu, you'll need the source code to the programs, as well as to the pwlib and openh323 libraries. Compilation instructions are available on the openh323 website.
2.5. GatekeepersOpenH323 doesn't provide any gatekeepers itself, but several are under construction based on its libraries. As of the end of 2000, most of them are actively under development and quite primitive. I haven't used any of them myself, but you want may to examine the following links:

TrueConf Server is a video conferencing tool that allows connections across LAN and VPN networks. Targeting the business environment, the server can sustain up to 250 client connections in a virtual meeting and run multipoint conferences with up to 25 participants, breaking geographical barriers and encouraging teamwork.
Web-based server management dashboard
As mentioned above, the application is based on a server-client architecture, enabling both Windows, Mac OS and mobile clients to connect to a running server. Pre-configured client applications are also deployed in the same package, so the server administrator only has to share the download link or the guest page.
Configuring the server is pretty simple, thanks to the web-based interface. You should have no problems getting around with the dashboard, which makes it easy for you to monitor the server status, manage users and groups, create aliases, and download client applications. Advanced users can tamper with the network settings (SMTP, SIP and H.323 gateways), limit the access of specific IP addresses to the server, view connecting endpoints, and change security options.
Run group conferences, chat, share files and access PCs remotely
The client application enables peers to access the server, provided the connection parameters are correct. Two or more client applications can perform video calls and make use of the additional collaboration tools to work together on projects. To be more specific, TrueConf Client features file sharing and remote access options, alongside a whiteboard that can be used by many client apps to sketch ideas and plans.Participants can record their video conference and take snapshots of the screen, view photo slideshows together with others, and chat using the integrated instant messenger.
Group conferences can be initiated both from the server's dashboard and from the client's interface. TrueConf Server supports both symmetric (all participants can hear one another), asymmetric (only a lecturer can be heard by others, who, in turn, can hear all the other users - useful for teachers), and role-based conferences.
